The Summer bunting has arrived in Hitchin! The idea of bunting is so traditionally English, dating back to the turn of the 17th century when bunting was made from a specific lightweight wool fabric used for making ribbons and flags. One of the earliest forms of bunting were the signal flags used by the Royal Navy in the early 18th century to warn other sea vessels of their arrival or any imminent danger. Today bunting can be made from many different materials including plastic, several different fabrics as well as wool. Bunting, nowadays, is most commonly used as a festive decoration, particular during the Spring and Summer months.
